Honors College Residence Hall

University of South Carolina
Columbia, SC

The new student housing will house 560 students and 3 faculty apartments in 4 to 6 story houses and will be located on the same block as the Graduate Science Center. This site was selected for its unique proximity to the Horseshoe, Russell House and Cooper Library. The chosen site allows for tremendous views to the State House, east across campus and south to the stadium and expanded play fields and has unique proximity to the Horseshoe and campus core. The solar orientation allows for south facing green space, providing wonderful outdoor program space for both the Honors College and the campus community. The buildings are designed with respect for the timeless and enduring qualities found in the best USC buildings. The massing is comparable in scale, shape, and character to the larger existing East, West and South Quad residence halls as well as the Presidents House on the Horseshoe. The complex will be predominately brick, with glazed bays with some alternative stone or precast detailing, and a metal roof. A broad entry porch stretches across the south façade, oriented towards the spectacular views across a newly planted set of green quads and of the lower campus beyond. This facility, in pursuit of the University’s commitment to sustainable design, is seeking Gold Leed Certification.
