St. Mary Help of Christians
The project, a parish life center and education addition, is located on a downtown site along a major street adjacent to the affiliated parochial school and diagonally opposite the parent church and historic chapel. The 19,000 square-feet of shared facilities include a multipurpose hall/gymnasium for basketball, volleyball, and various school and parish activities including occasional large church services. The hall is served by a full-service commercial-grade kitchen, a coach’s office, locker and storage rooms, and a platform for student and parish events. Also included is a four classroom elementary education addition with a teacher’s office/storage room located within each classroom and an enclosed playground.
A gabled entry portal offers an identifiable focal point and controlled entrance which organizes the program about an axial walk and outdoor corridor that tie to the existing education facility. Two restored stained glass windows recovered from the original sanctuary mark the entrances to the new facility while standing as salient landmarks to the community. The hall’s laminated wood roof structure, inspired by the original scissor trusses found in the historic chapel, provides an elegant spirit to the space while offering appropriate warmth in relation to the stained glass windows.
