Academic Office/Classroom Building

Coastal Carolina University

Conway, SC

Coastal Carolina’s Academic Office/Classroom Building #2 is a 52,000 square-foot facility adjacent to the University’s Wall Building and opposite Academic Office/Classroom Building #1, Brittain Hall. The building functions as a multidisciplinary center for study, housing 60 faculty and administration staff offices for various departments including Computer Science, RSM, Psychology, and University Honors, and includes sixteen 25 – 35 seat classrooms and labs. In addition, Coastal’s ITS Department has been relocated to the first floor, comprised of offices/work stations for 44 staff, and the campus’ newly upgraded Data Center made visible through a fully glazed corridor wall. Offices, classrooms, and meeting rooms feature abundant glazing both inside and out, allowing natural light to flood corridors and ancillary spaces. Seating areas and “collaboration zones” encourage informal discussion and are incorporated along circulation paths throughout the building. The first-floor lobby connects to the three-story “grand stair” and includes various seating groups and a University food service “grab-n-go” concept. The project utilizes energy efficient glazing, high-efficiency mechanical and electrical systems, sustainable site and water conservation strategies, and is LEED Gold Certified.
