Jervey Performance & Wellness Center Feasibility Study

Jervey Performance & Wellness Center Feasibility Study

Clemson University

Clemson, SC

The Jervey Performance and Wellness Center Feasibility Study clarifies the vision for a new, inclusive home for Clemson University’s Volleyball program and Athletics support programs. Clemson’s existing facilities for the Volleyball and Athletics support programs inside Jervey Athletic Center and Jervey Gym were dated and lackluster. The Jervey Performance and Wellness Center Feasibility Study proposes both new construction and selective renovation to create state-of-the-art facilities that will ensure Clemson remains a leader in collegiate athletics.

The study envisions a new 50,000-sf facility constructed in the existing sloped green space directly south of Jervey Gym.  This new building would house Clemson Athletics’ Strength and Conditioning, Nutrition, and Sports Medicine and Recovery programs. A food service and bistro area are designed to provide meals for student-athletes and coaches with a focus on health and nutrition as fuel for performance. This dining area features panoramic views of the Athletics precinct. Expansive glass curtain walls form the south and east elevations overlooking the intersection of Perimeter Road and Track Drive, maximizing views into and out of the Strength and Conditioning space and referencing recent capital projects within the Clemson Athletics precinct. The building’s major elevation is held back from Perimeter Road, maintaining a significant area for Game Day parking.

The study also proposes renovating portions of the ground floor of Jervey Athletic Center to create a new Volleyball locker room, team lounge, and salon. The study also proposes a complete renovation of Jervey Gym, including removing and raising the building’s roof to increase ceiling height in the Volleyball competition arena, exceeding NCAA height and clearance requirements and refreshing the look of this storied venue. A clever addition between Jervey Athletic Center and Jervey Gym would provide a new, accessible entry to the complex and enhance the connection between the Volleyball competition space and the ground floor of Jervey Athletic Center. A “hype tunnel” in this new enclosed space would enable the Volleyball team to directly access their competition space from their new locker room. The feasibility study process considered multiple iterations of renovation to the lower level of Jervey Athletic Center, ultimately proposing renovations for Clemson Volleyball.

Conceptual designs developed through the Jervey Performance and Wellness Center Feasibility Study consider not only the project’s importance to student-athletes, coaches, and spectators but also to the wider Clemson Athletics precinct.
