701 Whaley

701 Whaley

Columbia, SC

The 701 Whaley building, once the community center of the Olympia and Granby Mill village for decades, has been renovated to include a catering facility, offices, and apartments. The building sat vacant and in disrepair for many years. The revitalization of the Olympia and Granby Mill neighborhood, spurred b the renovation and adaptive reuse of the two signature mill buildings, has increased focus on the other historic buildings in the area. Having served as the community center for the area and including such amenities as a basketball court, swimming pool, barbershop, canteen, billiard room, and dance hall, 701 Whaley is a vital part of the neighborhood history. Much care was taken to restore the building with historically accurate details, including restoring the first and second floor windows that were bricked up when the building became a furniture warehouse. The building has become a favorite event space in the Columbia community.
